  • Read more 28NOV2013: Tough times at Alitalia as it parks nearly 13% of its fleet
Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino) has temporarily parked twenty-two of its aircraft. Though it still officially claims to operate 137 aircraft, extensive ch-aviation ACARS research has shown that the Italian national carrier has over the past two weeks parked two A319-100s, four A320-200s, thirteen A321-100s, two A330-200s in addition to one Air One (AP, Rome Fiumicino) A320-200. Most of the aircraft are at least temporarily stored at Rome Fiumicino. Earlier this year, Alitalia phased-out one A320-200 (joined by another which was damaged in a landing incident at Fiumicino) and an A321-100. Collectively, Gruppo Alitalia, which consists of Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino), Alitalia CityLiner (CT, Rome Fiumicino), Alitalia Express (XM, Rome Fiumicino), Air One and Volare Airlines (VE, Milan Malpensa), now operates 120 aircraft namely twenty A319-100s, fifty-one A320-200s, nine A321-100s, ten A330-200s, ten B777-200(ER)s, fifteen EMB-175s and five EMB-190s. The move comes at a delicate time for Alitalia as it presses ahead with a controversial EUR300million (USD408million) capital-raising drive required to keep it afloat.

Adria Airways (JP, Ljubljana) is to retire its fleet of four CRJ-200s and replace them with more CRJ-900s. Among the first jets to be parked are S5-AAD (cn 7166) and S5-AAE (cn 7170), EX-YU Aviation News says. Another of the fleet, cn 8010, was sold to Kazakhstan's Scat (DV, Shimkent) in late September. The two twinjets will be replaced with leased -900ERs formerly operated Italy's Alitalia CityLiner (CT, Rome Fiumicino). CEO Mark Anžur says the -200s are only suitable for developing new routes whereas Adria's strategy "is to operate larger aircraft and fewer frequencies," thereby allowing it to offer lower fares. In the year ahead, the Slovenian carrier intends to expand its network out of Ljubljana while offering 7th freedom flights out of Tirana. In addition, an unspecified jet could also be based out of Klagenfurt, Austria at some point in the future.

Livingston Air (JN, Milan Malpensa) president Riccardo Toto has announced that he would have written to Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino) proposing that the charter carrier could replace the two ATR 72-500s Alitalia had wet-leased from Carpatair (V3, Timisoara) until the recent runway overrun at Rome's Fiumicino airport. Toto proposes to take over two Alitalia CityLiner (CT, Rome Fiumicino) CRJ-900s and to operate them on behalf of Alitalia at a lower cost. All of Alitalia CityLiner's ten CRJ-900s have been stored at Fiumicino and the Alitalia regional carrier now operates 13 EMB-175s and five EMB-190s.

Carpatair (V3, Timisoara) has again resumed operations with its second ATR 72-500 operating on a wet-lease contract for Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino) now operating three daily services from Rome Fiumicino to both Bologna and Pisa on behalf of its Italian partner. Alitalia subsidiary Alitalia CityLiner (CT, Rome Fiumicino) will continue to operate between Rome and Ancona going forward where it had replaced Carpatair from mid-January following an incident with one of the ATR 72-500's air conditioning system. Carpatair has meanwhile retired its last of a total of three Fokker 70s with YR-KMC (c/n 11569) also expected to join Australian charter carrier Alliance Airlines (QQ, Brisbane Int'l) shortly like the other two aircraft. Carpatair continues to operate two ATR 72-500s, a B737-300, three Fokker 100s and five Saab 2000s.
  • Read more 24JAN2013: Alitalia replaces Carpatair on Ancona route after incident
Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino) has temporarily replaced wet-lease operator Carpatair (V3, Timisoara) on its route from Rome Fiumicino to Ancona. This follows an incident involving an ATR 72-500 of Carpatair on January 17 where the aircraft had to return back to Ancona for an emergency landing due to a problem with its airconditioning system. A similar problem had already developed on a flight on January 7 leading to another flight having to return back to Pisa. Alitalia is now temporarily using EMB-175s of subsidiary Alitalia CityLiner (CT, Rome Fiumicino) on the route until the cause of the incidents has been identified. Carpatair continues to operate its second ATR 72-500 on behalf of Alitalia between Rome Fiumicino and Pisa and has asked Avions de Transport Régional (Toulouse Blagnac) for assistance in the investigation of two incidents.
