  • Read more 08APR2014: Air France-KLM in cooperation talks with Etihad, Chinese carriers
Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi Int'l) is in talks with Air France (AF, Paris CDG) and partner KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL, Amsterdam) to share revenue on routes from Abu Dhabi Int'l to Europe. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, KLM Chief Executive Camiel Eurlings said the two groups are looking to finalize an initial joint-venture aimed at increasing cooperation beyond an existing code-sharing agreement.

One of the obstacles facing the pact is how revenue generated will be shared among the partners given the disparity in overall passenger traffic.

Mirroring local rival Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) and its recent announcement of talks with Air China (CA, Beijing Capital), Eurlings said the Franco-Dutch carrier is also considering deeper partnerships with China Southern Airlines (CZ, Guangzhou), China Eastern Airlines (MU, Shanghai Hongqiao) and Xiamen Airlines (MF, Xiamen) involving revenue sharing opportunities and combined operations.

Xiamen Airlines (MF, Xiamen) will expand its fleet to 150 aircraft by 2015 in preparation for its entry into the intercontinental scene. Chinese aviation portal, WCARN, says the carrier is planning to open new routes to Hanoi, Vientiane, Phnom Penh and Osaka Kansai with widebody services to new long-haul international services to include London, New York JFK and Sydney Kingford Smith.

At present, the airline operates fifteen B737-700s, seventy-eight B737-800s and six B757-200s on both domestic and regional flights to Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, Macau, Taiwan, and Indonesia.

"The government will fully support the development of Xiamen Airlines, help it solve practical difficulties in the field of production and management, and create a favorable environment and conditions to accelerate its development," Liu Keqing, the mayor of Xiamen, said during a visit of the airline's headquarters.

Xiamen Airlines will also invest about CNY20billion (USD328million) in building a new headquarters at the upcoming Xiang'an International Airport, Xiamen's second airport on Dadeng Island, Xiang'an District.

Xiamen Airlines (MF, Xiamen) has been granted permission by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to set up two new hubs in Beijing Capital and Changsha Datuopu. The airline's other hubs include Xiamen, Hangzhou and Fuzhou. WCARN says the move will allow the carrier to further its goals of becoming a major domestic player by strengthening its presence in northern China while expanding into the country's western and central regions. The airline is owned by China Southern Airlines (CZ, Guangzhou)(51%), Xiamen Construction and Development Group (34%), and Jizhong Energy Group (15%).

Xiamen Airlines (MF, Xiamen) and China Eastern Airlines (MU, Shanghai Hongqiao) will see increased competition out of their Nanchang hub with news that the airport's owner, the Jiangxi Airport Group Company (JAGC), is considering establishing its own carrier in the near future. According to WCARN, the JAGC has already conducted extensive route analysis and market research for the region ahead of its planned application later this year. Located in south-eastern China, Nanchang's traffic comes largely from domestic Chinese airports and Hong Kong.
