Thai Airways Int'l to axe 1'500 jobs this year

Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) management says it will lay off 1'500 workers this year as part of plans to cut THB4billion (USD126million) in overheads over the next two years. The new Thai military junta prioritized a restructuring plan for the loss-making carrier last month which, among other things, aims to cut over 6'000 posts by 2018. At present, Thai employs 25'000 staff with an additional 5'000 employed via third party contractors.

Thai Smile to switch select domestic routes to Bangkok Don Mueang

Thai Smile (WE, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) will move selected domestic Thai flights from its Bangkok Suvarnabhumi hub to Bangkok Don Mueang with effect from August 8. According to AirlineRoute, the destinations affected include Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Phuket. All three destinations will continue to be served by Thai Airways International from Suvarnabhumi with Thai Smile also retaining some flights between Suvarnabhumi and Phuket.

Thai Lion Air takes delivery of first ATR72-600

Thai Lion Air (SL, Bangkok Don Mueang) has taken delivery of its first ATR72-600, HS-LFH (cn 1134), at a ceremony held at Bangkok Don Mueang. According to Skyliner Aviation, the turboprop was ferried from Toulouse Blagnac to South East Asia via Paphos and Muscat.

As reported previously, the ATR will be based out of Hat Yai and will be used on flights to Kuala Lumpur Subang, Medan Kuala Namu, Surat Thani and Hua Hin.

Thai Lion Air (SL, Bangkok Don Mueang) is planning to add an undisclosed number of ATR72-600s to its fleet ch-aviation can exclusively reveal.
