Germany's Air Berlin rejects claims it will axe TUIfly lease deal

Air Berlin (AB, Berlin Tegel) has rejected reports in the German media that it is planning to terminate its leasing agreements with TUIfly (Germany) (X3, Hanover) as part of its restructuring plans. Presently, Air Berlin wet-leases five B737-700s and nine B737-800s from the carrier.

Air Berlin (AB, Berlin Tegel) has outlined the initial stages of its planned restructuring programme aimed at returning the loss-making carrier to what CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer termed "sustainable profitability" within the next three years.

Announcing a net profit of EUR8.6million (USD11.43million) for the airline's second quarter, Prock-Schauer said the turnaround plan would focus on three core segments, namely the European, tourist and long-haul markets.

Germany's TUIfly, Zweibrücken liquidator reach deal on future

TUIfly (Germany) (X3, Hanover) has reached an agreement with Zweibrücken's provisional liquidator, Jan Markus Plathner, concerning the airport's future. Germany's Airliners.de newswire says the carrier agreed to meet the airport's liquidity shortfall thereby ensuring its short term operational needs until November.

EC rules against Zweibrücken airport; future in doubt

TUIfly (Germany) (X3, Hanover) could be forced to terminate its Zweibrücken operations following reports the airport is now facing bankruptcy. German paper, Die Rheinpfalz, said in a report that a European Commission investigation has found that EUR56million (USD75.6million) in subsidies extended the airport by local authorities since 2006 have in fact violated European state aid laws.

Germany's TUIfly to enter Austrian leisure market in 2015

TUIfly (Germany) (X3, Hanover) is set to enter the Austrian leisure market with the launch of scheduled flights from Vienna to Greece in May of next year. According to the ch-aviation route database, the German carrier will operate weekly services to Patras, Kerkyra, and Heraklion, while Kos and Rhodes will each see twice weekly flights. All flights will operate on-board a B737-800.
