MASwings (MY, Kota Kinabalu) has taken delivery of its first brand new ATR72-600, 9M-MYA (c/n 1099), following a ceremony held in Toulouse Blagnac. Parent carrier, Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur International), and ATR - Avions de Transport Régional (EVX, Toulouse Blagnac) inked a deal in late 2012 for the purchase of thirty-six ATR72-600s (20 firm orders plus 16 options) to be operated by the airline's regional subsidiaries, MASwings and Firefly (FY, Penang). Based on the agreement MASwings, which currently flies ten ATR72-500s, will introduce nine ATR72-600s over the coming four years enabling it to boost existing frequencies and open up new routes across East Malaysia, and the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines & the East ASEAN Growth Area) region with Puerto Princesa, on Palawan Island in the Philippines, already scheduled to début before year end. This new route will complete MASwings' plan to link the other three countries in the BIMP-EAGA market with Malaysia, thereby making MASwings a truly regional carrier.
