EVA Air (BR, Taipei Taoyuan) will retire its fleet of five MD-11(F)s as part of plans to cut its freighter fleet to less than ten aircraft come 2015. In an interview with Bloomberg, airline President Austin Cheng says the need to reduce cargo capacity comes as a result of slowing global demand for larger, more cumbersome electronics in favor of smaller, more portable gadgets. “Apple not only changed consumers’ pattern, but also changed air cargo transportation,” Cheng said. “Electronic products are becoming smaller, while we charge by weight. The whole pattern for cargo transportation has changed.” EVA also operates nine B747-400(F) cargo aircraft.
