Kairali Airlines (Kochi International) is currently being investigated by the Kerala Police after it was found that CEO Kaithakattu Krishnankutty Praveen Kumar has a record of allegedly dabbling in fake currency rackets. Indian journal, Tehelka, claims that Mr Kumar has been arrested three times by the Crime Branch of Kerala Police. Kumar was sentenced to two years imprisonment in a case dating back to 2001, but was acquitted by the Kerala High Court. In the second case, the trial court sentenced him to seven years with hard labour for printing and circulating fake currency. His appeal is currently pending before the high court. “There is a third case in which trial is pending and he is out on bail,” Additional Director General of Police, Vinson Paul, said. Veteran politician VS Achuthanandan has demanded a probe into Kairali Airlines and its promoters saying he suspects them of being a "fraudulent business" which "uses its political clout to con investors." Kairali is scheduled to launch operations in April next year using a fleet of six leased ATR turboprops.
