VivaColombia (Medellín José Maria Córdova) has been granted its first international traffic rights out of Medellín José Maria Córdova. In an interview with El Colombiano, Mr Declan Ryan, son of the founder of the Irish LCC Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) and co-founder of Viva Colombia, said Colombia's Special Administrative Unit of Civil Aeronautics (Aerocivil) had granted the Colombian LCC the go-ahead to serve Panamá City Tocumen International, México City International and Cancún with seven weekly frequencies each. Aerocivil also granted VivaColombia several additional Colombian domestic routes. Using a fleet of five A320-200s, VivaColombia launched domestic operations in 2011. Since then it has moved to consolidate its presence in the country ahead of a planned expansion into Central and South America as well as the southern United States. When asked about his future investment plans, Mr Ryan said he saw strong potential in countries such as Chile and Panama as well as in Central America in general, but dispelled any notion of setting up shop in either Argentina or Brazil given the difficulties associated with entering those two markets.
