Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium (Brussels National) , Brussels Airlines (SN, Brussels National) and Jetairfly (Brussels National) could collectively benefit from EUR20million (USD27.55million) in indirect subsidies from the Belgian state Belgium's La Libre has revealed. The newspaper says Melchior Wathelet, Secretary of State for the Environment, Energy, Mobility and Institutional Reforms, intends to create an endowment fund for Brussels National Airport to cover the provision of security costs (fire, security services, etc). The subsidy would then exempt the three Belgian carriers from paying for those services. Above all, the report claims, Brussels Airlines would receive the lion's share with EUR15million in cost-savings. However, the move is seen as a means to circumvent strict European Commission laws which govern the extension of state aide to private companies. The Belgian parliament is due to debate the measure during the course of this week.
