Southwest Airlines (WN, Dallas Love Field) could complete the phasing out of its fleet of seventy-nine B717-200s as early as the first quarter of 2015. FlightGlobal says the move would allow the Texan LCC to streamline its flight operations following its acquisition of AirTran Airways (Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson). However, it is claimed, the retirement won't affect the rate of introduction of the twinjets to Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) as the affected 717s will “remain inactive” after their retirement by Southwest until Delta introduces them into service. Southwest Airlines will replace the Boeing 717 with twelve additional B737-700s as well as 52 additional B737-800s due between 2014/15.
