GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes (G3, São Paulo Congonhas) and other local Brazilian operators could see increased competition on the domestic front after government announced plans to allow foreign carriers to operate within the country's airspace during this year's FIFA World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place between June 12 and July 13. Prime Minister Helen Hoffmann Gleisi says her government wants to introduce the new legislation as a means of boosting competition on local routes thereby lowering fares. "We will not set ticket prices, but we will do everything in our power to prevent predatory pricing," she said. According to the Brazilian press, domestic fares over the World Cup period have rocketed up 176%. Given the country's size, air transport is the only viable means of travelling between the 12 venues with an estimated 600'000 visitors expected.
