Air Zimbabwe (UM, Harare International) has had its entire board of directors fired by Zimbabwean Minister of Transport, Obert Mpofu. The airline's management is at the centre of a USD11million insurance scam which recently came to light following a forensic audit of the airline's operations. The airline's CEO Innocent Mavhunga, his predecessor Peter Chikumba and secretary, Grace Pfumbidzayi, were recently arrested and charged with six counts of fraud and another of criminal abuse of office. “The ZRP would like to confirm that Peter Chikumba and Innocent Mavhunga have been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigations into the Air Zimbabwe (Private) Limited fraud case. “Chikumba, a former chief executive of Air Zimbabwe from September 2007 to December 2010, and Innocent Mavhunga, the suspended chief executive, are Grace Nyaradzo Pfumbidzayi’s accomplices in the fraud case,” police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, told The Herald. "Pfumbidzayi is facing six counts of contravening section 136 of the Criminal law, where Air Zimbabwe allegedly suffered an actual prejudice of USD1'298'827.88 and EUR5'895'695.90. She is also facing allegations of contravening section 174 (1) (a) of the criminal law (codification and reform Act) of criminal abuse of duty as public officer," she added. Minister Mpofu is expected to convene a new board at a later date. According to the ministry, the reconstituted board will be mandated with ensuring that there is improved service delivery, maximisation of shareholder value and to spearhead the turnaround of the state-owned enterprise.
