VivaColombia (Medellín José Maria Córdova) is considering establishing a base at San Salvador International, El Salvador as an initial foothold into the lucrative, yet underserved, Central American market.

Speaking at the recent Routes Americas conference, VivaColombia Vice President Commercial, William Shaw, said his airline was talking to many countries in the region and saw great potential for a Low Cost Carrier in the region.

"We're seeing the possibilities of a route to El Salvador or of having a base in El Salvador," Shaw told Dinero. Shaw added that El Salvador's attractiveness stemmed from its enormous tourism potential as well as its huge diaspora community abroad.

El Salvadoran Tourism Minister Jose Napoleon Duarte, confirmed negotiations with the Colombian airline are at an advanced stage.

Local LCC start-up, VECA Airlines (San Salvador International), is in the process of finalizing its permits with a planned launch date set for April.
