Mexicana (1921) (México City International) has reportedly piqued the interest of LAN Airlines (Santiago de Chile) parent, LATAM, after the Chilean-Brazilian firm took note of Aeroméxico (AM, México City International) and its strong performance, especially on international routes.

Mexican newswire Reportur says LATAM has yet to proffer any offer to the now defunct Mexicana but has already carried out a study on the airline.

"LAN has seen the returns being achieved by Aeromexico on international flights, and this has led it to conclude that despite the entry of three low-cost carriers - Interjet (AIJ, Toluca), Volaris (Y4, México City International) and VivaAerobus (VB, Monterrey Mariano Escobedo) - there is room for another airline that also complements their network," an unnamed source at LATAM told the newswire.

For its part, Mexicana has been embroiled in legal battles and bankruptcy hearings since the suspension of operations in 2010.
