Ukraine International Airlines (PS, Kyiv Boryspil) and other Ukrainian operators have suspended flights from the capital, Kiev, to the Crimean town of Simferopol after pro-Russian militia took control of the airport. A Ukraine International Airlines flight from Kyiv Boryspil was recently forced to return to Kiev in mid-flight.

Militia in charge of the airport have allowed civilian operations to resume though only for flights to the Russian capital Moscow.

Tensions on the peninsula have risen after the Crimean parliament announced plans to hold a referendum on cessation from Ukraine on March 17.
