Mjair Airlines (Harare International) is the latest Zimbabwean start-up looking to break the Air Zimbabwe (UM, Harare International) monopoly. According to a local government gazette listing, the airline intends to ply the local, regional and international routes.

“Notice is hereby given that Mjair Airlines (Private) Limited has applied to the Air Services Board for the issue of an air services permit to provide commercial scheduled air services for the carriage of passengers, dry and/or fresh cargo, and mail on local, regional and international routes,” the notice said.

Despite the moribund nature of Air Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwean government has been unwilling to open up the lucrative local and regional playing field to start-ups with entrants often complaining about being awarded economically unviable routes.
