Alas Uruguay (Montevideo Carrasco) will launch operations in October with charter flights to Santiago de Chile, Asuncion, São Paulo Guarulhos, Rio de Janeiro International and Buenos Aires Jorge Newbery after it secured USD15million in funding from the Uruguayan government's national development fund (FONDES). Scheduled services are expected to begin in either November or December.

Using a fleet of three leased B737-300s, the start-up's second phase of expansion will include flights to Porto Alegre International and Curitiba International in Brazil, Córdoba International in Argentina, and Santa Cruz Viru Viru in Bolivia.

Founded by former PLUNA (Montevideo Carrasco) employees, Alas Uruguay management says it wants a share of the country's regional market, which is currently dominated by BQB Líneas Aéreas (Punta del Este).
