PEOPLExpress (Newport News) will be officially unveiled to the public at a ceremony to be held at Newport News on Friday, May 30. Among the gliteratti expected to be present are Virginia governor, Terry McAuliffe (D). At the event, People Express President and CEO Jeff Erickson will unveil the carrier's initial destinations, flight schedule and ticket prices.

According to US Department of Transportation (DoT) papers seen by ch-aviation, besides routes from Newport News, initial services will likely launch in mid-June with Washington National to Myrtle Beach International flights.

Thus far, a B737-400, N745VA (msn 24271), has been secured on wet-lease from Vision Airlines (United States of America) (Las Vegas Harry Reid).

Erickson has said in the past that his airline intends to fill the void left by AirTran Airways (Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) when it pulled out of the Newport News market in 2012 following its takeover by Southwest Airlines (WN, Dallas Love Field). PEOPLExpress will also serve New York Newark as well as Boston, and Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson.
