Air Namibia (Windhoek International) has once more resumed widebody services into and out of Windhoek International after a directive forcing the airline to relocate its longhaul flight operations to Lusaka, Zambia, was rescinded last week.

Late last month, an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audit of Windhoek's firefighting capabilities revealed that one of the three firetrucks required to maintain the airport's Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (RFFS) Category 9 rating was unserviceable. As result, the ICAO issued a directive downgrading the airfield to a Category 5.

While the downgrade did not affect Air Namibia's A319-100 and E135 operations, it did affect its A330-200 fleet (and that of South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) which uses the type on its Johannesburg O.R. Tambo services) which requires a minimum Category 7 clearance as per international regulations.

The owner of Windhoek Hosea Kutako Int'l Airport, the Namibia Airports Company, says it has acquired 11 new firetrucks with the first due to have been delivered on August 1.
