British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) has suspended, with immediate effect, its 4x weekly services to Sierra Leone and Liberia citing concerns about the recent outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa.

"We have temporarily suspended our flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone until August 31, 2014, due to the deteriorating public health situation in both countries," the carrier said in a statement. "The safety of our customers, crew and ground teams is always our top priority and we will keep the routes under constant review in the coming weeks."

British Airways, which serves Freetown and Monrovia Roberts with 4x weekly flights, follows Emirates (EK, Dubai International) which recently extended a ban on flights to Conakry, the capital of neighbouring Guinea.

The Ebola virus has thus far claimed the lives of almost 1'000 people with roughly 1'800 more currently infected.

There is no known cure for the disease.
