Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) is set to resume flights to the Venezuelan capital, Caracas Simón Bolivar, with effect from September. The Italian carrier suspended the route back in June citing Venezuela's ongoing foreign currency crisis, which had rendered the flights economically unsustainable.

However, speaking to the Globovisión television network, Venezuela's Minister of Tourism, Andrés Izarra, claimed Alitalia's decision to quit the route had been due a need to meet demand stemming from the recently ended FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

Alitalia's flights from Rome Fiumicino to Caracas will initially operate twice weekly on-board an A330-200 before increasing to 3x weekly from late October onwards.
