Kulula Air (Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) has announced plans to retrofit four of its B737-800s with Split Scimitar Winglets (SSW) effectively making it the first African carrier to use the technology. With the kit having already been fitted onto one of its aircraft, the Comair (South Africa) (CAW, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) subsidiary intends to fit it onto an additional three in due course.

"The winglets, offered by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB), will be fitted to three additional Boeing Next-Generation B737-800 aircraft currently in the kulula fleet and will also be fitted to the four new Boeing Next Generation 737-800s which are set to be delivered in late 2015 and 2016," it said.

In March this year, Comair announced an order for eight B737 MAX 8s valued at USD830million.
