Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) will terminate its African operations in Janaury of next year Airline Route reports. The Thai carrier's final Bangkok Suvarnabhumi to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo service is tentatively scheduled for January 14, 2015.

The route's termination is part of the Thai carrier's recently launched turnaround programme which aims to make THB4billion (USD126million) in cuts over the next two years. The airline has attributed its consecutive losses to high operating costs and a continued slump in passenger numbers exacerbated by the country's recent political and social unrest.

Despite intense union opposition, Bangkok's new military junta is determined to return the struggling carrier to profitability and has stated uncategorically that over 6'000 posts will be cut from the carrier's payroll by 2018.
