Primera Air Scandinavia (Billund) operated its maiden Reykjavik Keflavik to New York JFK flight on Sunday, November 16, roughly a month after it received route exemption from the US Department of Transportation (DoT).

While the granting of US traffic rights is an important milestone for Primera Air, CEO Hrafn Thorgeirsson said his airline has no immediate plans to exploit them on a large scale.

"However, it must be pointed out that the rights do open up new channels and definitely means that we can offer a more varied program," he said. "It will enable us to work in bigger markets in the future as the US is the second biggest international tourist destination in the world with over 70 million passengers arriving each year".

As a member of Denmark's Primera Travel Group (which includes Solresor, Bravo Tours, Lomamatkat, Heimsferðir and Solia), Primera Air Scandinavia's primary goal is to provide air travel services to the leisure market. At present, its fleet consists of two B737-700s and five B737-800s.
