Medavia (Malta International) has opened up its weekly Malta International to Tripoli Mitiga service to the general public effective January 19. The Beech 1900D-operated flights, which Med Avia has been plying for an oil company on an ad-hoc charter basis for the last two months, are sold in conjunction with FCm Travel Solutions.

Since the onset of heavy fighting in June last year, flights to the Libyan capital have come at a steep premium with all international carriers having now suspended services to both Tripoli International and Tripoli Mitiga.

However, after the government of ousted Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni joined the Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) militia alliance in announcing a ceasefire earlier this month, Afriqiyah Airways (8U, Tripoli Mitiga) resumed limited operations out of Mitiga with flights to Düsseldorf on Sunday, January 25. Flights to Rome Fiumicino are also expected to resume in the coming days. Afriqiyah is using two A320-200s wet-leased from Vista Georgia (Tbilisi) for its European operations to Istanbul Atatürk, Dusseldorf and Rome.

Following the collapse of a first round of talks earlier this month, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is hoping to broker a definitive end to hostilities during a second round of talks between the two sides this week.
