Liberty Helicopters has applied to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for permission to operate scheduled passenger services. The New York-based helicopter charter specialist said in its application that it is looking to offer commuter flights between various New York City heliports and destinations such as the Mohegan Sun Casino Helipad, Montauk, the Southampton Heliport, and East Hampton Town.
"These flights will be predominantly arranged via software applications that allow customers to crowdsource charter flights. Customers with be able to either (a) launch a crowdsourced flight departing at a specific time and make open seats available to other customers; or (b) purchase a seat on a pre-existing flight launched via (a)," it said.
Liberty Helicopters currently operates a fleet of eleven Eurocopter AS350s.
