VivaColombia (Medellín José Maria Córdova) has applied to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for a Foreign Air Carrier Permit and Route Exemptions needed to commence scheduled passenger flights to the United States.
In its application, the Colombian LCC said it planned to begin daily flights from Bogotá and Medellín José Maria Córdova to Miami International later this year using one of its seven A320-200s.
The US-Colombia market is currently dominated by American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth), Avianca (Bogotá), Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson), LAN Colombia (Bogotá), and United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) with JetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) and Spirit Airlines (NK, Fort Lauderdale International) its only budget carriers.
A joint-venture between Irelandia Aviation of Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) fame, Mexican bus company Inversionistas en Autotransportes Mexicanos S.A. de C.V., Colombia's Grupo Bolívar and Grupo FAST, VivaColombia currently offers flights to fourteen destinations located mainly in Colombia as well as in Peru, Ecuador, and Panama.
