Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) has reportedly decided not to completely close its Wizz Air Ukraine (Kyiv Igor Sikorsky) subsidiary following talks with officials from the Ukrainian Ministry of Transport in Switzerland last week.

Late last month, the Hungarian LCC announced it would wind up Wizz Air Ukraine's operations later this month citing "ongoing instability in Eastern Ukraine, the devaluation and volatility of the local currency, the Hryvnia, and the impact of foreign exchange controls."

However, Kiev this week announced that in the wake of the talks, Wizz Air has decided to keep its subsidiary, albeit in a dormant state, pending an improvement in Ukraine's economic outlook.

Using one of Wizz Air Ukraine's two A320-200s, UR-WUA (cn 3531) and UR-WUB (cn 3741), Wizz Air will proceed with plans to develop an own Kyiv Igor Sikorsky base serving Budapest, Dortmund, London Luton, Cologne/Bonn, Hamburg Luebeck, Katowice Pyrzowice, Larnaca, Memmingen initially. The other jet will be redeployed to Wizz Air's Kosice, Slovakia base for use on flights to Milan Bergamo and Doncaster/Sheffield in June.
