Durgapur Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in India's eastern state of West Bengal has officially commenced commercial operations with the launch of dedicated Air India (AI, Delhi International) flights to Kolkata this week.

The 6x weekly return flights operate on-board an Alliance Air (India) (9I, Delhi International) ATR42-320 and are the airfield's only scheduled services at present. IndiGo Airlines (6E, Delhi International) and GoAir (Mumbai International) are also in the process of developing their own routes there local media report. Pinnacle Air (Delhi International) will also offer charter flights to Bagdogra, Kolkata, and Cooch Behar four days a week.

The 650-acre Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, developed by Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL), is India's first operational private Greenfield airport under the country's Greenfield Airport Policy.
