South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) has secured Fifth Freedom traffic rights out of Ghana paving the way for it to ferry customers between Accra and Washington Dulles as part of its new 4x weekly Johannesburg O.R. Tambo to Washington via Accra return service, slated to launch on August 1.

With the transatlantic flight's new routing, so SAA's existing service to Washington via the Senegalese capital, Dakar Yoff-Léopold Sédar Senghor International, will reduce from daily to 3x weekly. All flights operate on-board A340-600s.

To help foster growth at its Accra hub, SAA has also signed a codeshare agreement with Ghanaian carrier Africa World Airlines (AW, Accra) under which it will place its "SA" flight code on the Hainan Airlines (HU, Haikou) subsidiary's flights to Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale locally as well as to Lagos, Nigeria regionally.
