ANA - All Nippon Airways (NH, Tokyo Haneda) says it is planning to resume services to the Oceania market later this year with the launch of direct flights between Tokyo Haneda and Sydney Kingsford Smith in Australia. Pending government approval, the carrier says it will deploy a B787-9 onto the route which should launch on Friday, December 11, 2015.

Once service commences, All Nippon will compete with an existing Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) route between the two cities which operates daily on-board B747-400 equipment.

According to the ch-aviation route database, the Japan-Australia direct market is currently dominated by Australian airlines chief of which is Qantas's LCC subsidiary, Jetstar Airways (JQ, Melbourne Tullamarine), which serves Osaka Kansai and Tokyo Narita from Cairns, Melbourne Tullamarine, Sydney, and Gold Coast Coolangatta. JAL - Japan Airlines (JL, Tokyo Haneda) also offers flights to Sydney albeit from Tokyo Narita.
