Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong International) Director of Corporate Affairs James Tong says his airline is planning to conclude B747-400 operations a year earlier than originally planned.

Speaking to the Apple Next Media news site, Tong said concerns over fuel efficiency had warranted the move and as such, instead of being retired in 2017, the quadjets would now be gone by October of next year. The aircraft will be replaced by Cathay Pacific's more efficient fleet of fifty-three B777-300(ER)s.

According to the ch-aviation aircraft database, the carrier operates three B747-400s (averaging 21.5 years of age) on passenger flights to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Beijing Capital, Denpasar, Manila Ninoy Aquino International, Osaka Kansai, Surabaya, Taipei Taoyuan, Tokyo Haneda, and Tokyo Narita. It also operates a fleet of ten B747-400(F)s on cargo flights throughout Asia, Europe, and North America.
