TAM Linhas Aéreas (São Paulo Congonhas) is planning to commence scheduled passenger flights to South Africa later next year in a move that will see the LATAM Airlines Group making its African debut.

The Group said in a statement that regulatory approvals aside, the Oneworld affiliate would ply the São Paulo Guarulhos-Johannesburg O.R. Tambo route which is currently dominated by Star Alliance affiliate, South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo).

Varig (Rio de Janeiro International) was the last Brazilian carrier to service the route until 2006 when it ceased operations.
