American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) has agreed to build five new gates at Chicago O'Hare using its own funds the city's mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced. The gates will be located in Terminal 3 and are scheduled for completion by 2018.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, American is the second largest carrier at O'Hare with 38.43% of the airport's total weekly frequencies behind United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) which controls 46.10%.

The Chicago Department of Aviation recently unveiled a USD1.3 billion O'Hare airport upgrade and modernization plan which, aside from the construction of additional gates, envisages the building of a new runway (9C/27C), deicing pads, and a new crossfield taxiway network.
