The Montenegrin state has launched an investigation into the terms of a Commercial Cooperation Agreement signed last year between Montenegro Airlines (Podgorica) and Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi International).

Quoting the Pobjeda newspaper, EX-YU Aviation News reports the Special State Prosecutor's Office's investigation focusses on the codesharing aspects of the deal.

The Emirati carrier is currently assisting Montenegro Airlines in its efforts to restructure its operations and improve its overall fleet efficiency. Etihad last month presented its analysis of Montenegro Airlines' operations wherein it identified several potential codeshare partners which would give allow the carrier access to an additional fifty destinations.

As part of the former Yugoslav republic's hopes for accession into the European Union, the European Commission (EC) has also announced it has begun scrutinizing the legality of state financial aid given to Montenegro Airlines over the past several years.
