Malaysia Aviation Group Berhad (MAG) is planning to partner Lufthansa Technik AG in the establishment of a regional MRO facility at the carrier's Kuala Lumpur International base.

Under the terms of the strategic partnership, the facility is scheduled to come online in 2017 and will use Malaysia Airlines' existing infrastructure. Once operational, it will specialize in the servicing of the A320 and B737 families of aircraft.

“We are excited about the tangible benefits of the JV. Lufthansa Technik is one of the global leaders in MRO services, and the level of skill, expertise and technological transfer will be invaluable, both for us and for Malaysia," the Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group Berhad and Malaysia Airlines Berhad, Christoph Mueller, said.

The contract will fall under the oversight of MAB Engineering, MAG's MRO division. Incorporated in May 2015, MAB Engineering provides repair and overhaul, as well as line and hangar maintenance services, for international carriers, including some 100 third-party customers.

The consummation of the joint-venture is subject to, inter alia, approvals from the relevant regulatory authorities and the signing of definitive agreements.
