Georgetown Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana has threatened to ban Caribbean Airlines (BW, Port of Spain) from using its facilities should the airline fail to allow passengers to transport goods acquired at the local duty free all the way to the United States and Canada.

Reports in the local Guyanese press last week said authorities in Trinidad & Tobago had begun seizing duty-free rum from passengers who were transiting through the island and were forced to go through Trinidadian security checks. In its defense, Trinidad's customs agency said its actions were inline with local and US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security requirements.

Authorities in Guyana told the Demerara Waves news agency that a counter proposal to allow passengers to store said alcohol in their baggage, as opposed to in their carry-ons, prior to boarding had been rejected by the airline with no counter proposal offered.

The airport has now given CAL until July 6, 2016 to comply with its request or face being banned from landing there.

Caribbean Airlines operates a 3x daily return service between Port of Spain and Georgetown.
