interCaribbean Airways (JY, Providenciales) is planning to build a dedicated terminal at Ocho Rios in Jamaica airline CEO Trevor Sadler has disclosed.

According to the Jamaica Observer, the USD25 million building forms part of the regional operator's plans to tap the Cuban market which, it believes, is set to boom should the United States lift a sixty year-old trade embargo.

The facility will also cater to Chinese tourism which is set to grow after the Jamaican government last year agreed to give the Chinese 485 hectares of prime real estate to build three luxury hotels with 2,400 rooms. The offering was in return for the construction of a 67 kilometre highway which runs from Ocho Rios in the north, to the capital, Kingston.

“Certainly the Jamaican Government is keen to develop the airport and its arrivals to support better traffic flow for Ocho Rios, but there are some runway limitations that don’t help us in terms of what we could offer to the market,” Sadler said.

At present, interCaribbean connects Kingston Norman Manley with Montego Bay locally and Providenciales regionally.
