Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to remove weekly seat quotas on commercial flights between the two countries.

The terms of the Thai-Cambodian bilateral air services agreement had previously capped the number of weekly seats per side at 5,300 per side.

However, the Bangkok Post quotes Thai Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith as saying the decision to dispense with the quotas came after a review showed there were in fact 108 flights/18,312 seats available from Thailand to Cambodia each week, whereas there were 7 flights/1,288 seats available per week from Cambodia to Thailand.

According to the ch-aviation capacity database, Bangkok Airways (PG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) is the most prominent operator of flights between the two countries offering 8,806 seats/week or 42.63% of total market share. Other operators include Thai AirAsia (FD, Bangkok Don Mueang) with 5,040 seats/week (24.4%), Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) with 4,186 (20.27%), Thai Smile (Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) with 2,352 (11.39%) and Cambodia Angkor Air (K6, Siem Reap) with 272 seats per week (1.32%).

In addition to the quota amendment, the two countries have also agreed to grant either side's carriers 5th Freedom traffic rights. Arkhom said Cambodia has chosen South Korea as one of the two destination countries while Thailand has yet to pick any.
