The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has asked local operators serving Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport to cease overnighting aircraft used for domestic flights, at the airfield.

According to Vietnamese state radio, given growing apron constraints at Tan Son Nhat, Vietnam Airlines, VietJetAir, and Jetstar Pacific have been asked to ferry their aircraft to the neighbouring airfields of Can Tho, located 130kilometres away in the Mekong Delta, as well as Nha Trang Cam Ranh and Da Nang in the central region.

The request comes as Ho Chi Minh City, as with many of Vietnam's other airports, is struggling to cope with the country's rapidly expanding aviation industry.

Official figures released by the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) show that at the country's air traffic volume will reach 122 million by 2020 with an average growth rate of 14.2% per year for the period 2015-20. By 2030, passenger air traffic is forecast at 322 million per year, using a 10.2% annual growth rate between 2020 and 2030.

As part of its solution to the problem, the Vietnamese government has proposed limiting to eighty-nine, the number of additional aircraft the country's four largest airlines can purchase up to 2020.
