Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, São Paulo Viracopos) management has reconnoitred Mossoró Governador Dix-Sept Rosado Airport, in northeastern Brazil, as part of plans to resume operating from the dormant facility Mossoro Hoje news has reported.

The airfield was closed to commercial traffic in January 2016 by the Brazilian civil aviation authority (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil - ANAC) citing various safety code violations. Among the issues mentioned included the absence of signage, lighting, and fencing around the airfield's only runway, 05/23, as well as the presence of dwellings within the 150metre runway buffer zone.

As such, the report indicates that improvements have been undertaken including the upgrade of the airport passenger terminal and the installation of fire fighting equipment.

Impressed with the work undertaken, Azul's technical team is now assessing the site before committing to a service to either Recife or Natal Aluizio Alves.

The flights, which will operate using one of Azul's forty ATR72-600s, are expected to commence between sixty and ninety days after the official green light has been given.
