Puerto Barrios Airport, situated along Guatemala's Caribbean coast line, has resumed commercial operations after TAG Airlines (5U, Guatemala City) conducted its maiden scheduled flights to the airfield from Guatemala City on Monday, January 30.

The weekday-only return service operates using E110 equipment. ARM Aviación (MMG, Guatemala City) has also expressed an interest in serving the port city the El Salvador newspaper adds.

A Guatemalan government statement says the airfield is undergoing refurbishment with terminal works expected to be completed by April of this year.

Puerto Barrios is also an important gateway for cruise ships. As such, it is hoped the airport's refurbishment will support the opening of international flights at some point in the future.
