The Ghanaian government has plans to review the allocation of the 5th Freedom traffic rights granted to foreign carriers, Minister of Aviation Cecilia Dapaah has said.

“The Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights are for a specified period," Dapaah told the B&FT newspaper. "We will renegotiate and get the best for Ghana.”

Following the demise of Ghana Airways (Accra) in 2004 and its successor Ghana International Airlines (Accra) in 2010, the Ghanaian government began allocating the traffic rights to interested carriers in a bid to increase competition on regional routes while driving down prices.

Dapaah's comments come at a time when President Nana Akufo-Addo's government is pushing ahead with plans to establish a new national carrier by 2019. Last week, she was quoted as saying foreign investors had started to submit proposals for the carrier which will take the form of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
