Alaska Airlines (AS, Seattle Tacoma International) has confirmed it will discontinue the Virgin America (San Francisco) name "likely sometime in 2019". On the announcement of its buy-out of Virgin late last year, Alaskan Airlines was coy about the future of the iconic brand which has attracted a loyal customer base in the San Francisco area.

However, in a statement this week, Alaska Airlines said that after careful consideration, it had decided that the newly merged company would adopt Alaska's name and logo across the board.

As it stands, Alaska Airlines has said it will spend 2017 working towards a Single Operator's Certificate (SOC) which it expects to obtain in early 2018.

Alaska Airlines completed its acquisition of Virgin America on December 14, 2016, paying USD2.6 billion to the carrier's stockholders and other equity holders.
