Gwadar airport, located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf near the Pakistani deep-sea port of Gwadar, will be closed to commercial operations for the whole of July while construction work is carried out to extend its runway, reports Daily Pakistan.

The PKR22 billion rupee (USD210 million) upgrade is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project which aims to improve connections between the two countries. Funding has been provided by the Chinese government in the form of a grant.

Currently, only PIA - Pakistan International Airlines (PK, Islamabad International) operates out of the international airport, offering flights to Karachi International and Turbat domestically, and Muscat in Oman.

Once completed, the upgrades at the airport will allow it to accommodate widebody aircraft up to and including the A320.
