UPS Airlines (5X, Louisville International) parent United Parcel Service has announced it will switch its Tampa, Florida express air operations base from St. Petersburg/Clearwater to Tampa International Airport, located 16 kilometres east, with effect from October 16.

In a statement, the US logistics specialist said Tampa International offered six times more space than its current St Petersburg facility. As such, this will allow it to bring some sorting indoors while providing more space for larger aircraft during peak season.

The Tampa facility currently handles next-day and second-day air packages. With those functions moved to St. Petersburg, UPS will shift a postal handling facility that was not previously located in an airport, to Tampa International.
