Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) will open a new seasonal summer base in Burgas, Bulgaria and will start seven new routes from the coastal city as of June 2021 in a boost to the country’s tourism industry.
The Hungarian low-cost carrier said it would have one A320 aircraft based at Burgas airport from June 10 until September 12.
The aircraft will support the opening of new routes to Dortmund, Tel Aviv Ben Gurion, Kyiv Igor Sikorsky, Liverpool, Poznan Lawica, Eindhoven, and Turku, totalling more than 200,000 seats in 2021.
This will help ramp up Bulgaria’s tourism sector by enabling direct connections to the country's popular seaside. Spokesperson Andras Rado said Wizz Air foresees demand across Europe to travel to Bulgaria during the summer holiday season.
Fraport Bulgaria Chief Executive Officer Frank Quante said: “This is a significant development, and we can only wish to retain as many routes as possible all-year-round in Burgas.”
Wizz Air entered the Bulgarian market in 2005 with flights from Sofia to Budapest. According to the carrier's press release, it has carried almost 19 million passengers to and from Bulgaria in the past 16 years. It now already maintains bases in Sofia and Varna.
Wizz Air’s young fleet of on average 5.4-year-old aircraft comprises 120 Airbus single-aisle aircraft. It currently has the third-largest order book of over 250 aircraft of the A320neo family. The current passenger fleet consists of sixty-four A320-200s, six A320-200Ns (34 more on order), thirty-four A321-200s, fourteen A321-200NXs (with 198 more to be delivered), as well as twenty A321-200NX(LR)s on order. It also has one A330-200F.
