A call has been made for a seaplane service for business travellers to augment an existing air bridge operated by Caribbean Airlines (BW, Port of Spain) between the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
It comes from the Tobago Business Chamber after Caribbean Airlines on April 2 increased its inter-island service to 24 daily flights to meet travel demand.
Chamber of Commerce Chairman Martin George said that while the organisation was grateful for the increase in the number of airbridge flights, a seaplane service was also needed to facilitate doing inter-island business, reported News Day.
“We need to explore the idea of a seaplane service between Scarborough [on Tobago] and Port of Spain [the capital on Trinidad] for business travellers,” he said.
“It is ludicrous that you have to basically take a whole day for any business that any Tobagonian has to conduct in Port of Spain, if you have to go down to Crown Point, to the ANR Robinson International Airport (Tobago), get a flight, travel into Port of Spain, then conduct your meeting – which may be just ten or 15 minutes. Then you have to fight with the traffic to come back up to Piarco, wait on your flight, and then get back to Tobago. You basically lose an entire day for what could be a ten- or 15-minute meeting in Port of Spain,” he explained.
Caribbean Airlines operates a fleet of 21 aircraft, comprising seven ATR72-600s, seven B737-8s with three more of the type on order, and seven B737-800s, according to the ch-aviation fleets module.
