Air Iceland (Reykjavik Domestic) will switch from Fokker Aircraft (Woensdrecht) to Bombardier Aerospace (BBA, Montréal Trudeau) turboprops as part of its fleet renewal plans unveiled by parent, the Icelandair Group, this week.

In a statement, the Icelandic corporation said Air Iceland's fleet of five Fokker 50s would be sold off and replaced with three Dash 8-400s. The move will see the carrier transition to an all-Bombardier fleet including its two Dash 8-200s which will be retained.

"The airline’s operations will be simplified and optimised as the number of aircraft decrease and synergies will increase as all aircraft will be from the same manufacturer," the Group said. "As the Q400 is faster and has a longer range, Air Iceland sees opportunities in new markets. The company will be better equipped to service the domestic market as the aircraft are larger and travel time will be shorter."

The carrier offers scheduled flights to destinations throughout Iceland and Greenland including Reykjavik Domestic, Akureyri, Egilsstadir, Isafjordur, Kulusuk, Narsarsuaq, and Nuuk.

Meanwhile, sister carrier Icelandair (FI, Reykjavik Keflavik) will replace two B757s, coming off lease in autumn this year, with two B767-300(ER)s due in spring 2016. The new aircraft will either be leased or purchased.
