Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) has announced a new restructuring plan that will see Alitalia concentrating on its hub at Rome Fiumicino and cut the number of flights from Milan Malpensa. It is planning to transfer most of its long-haul routes from Milan to Rome as part of the plan (with the exception of Buenos Aires Ezeiza, New York JFK and Tokyo Narita that would be operated from both airports) while its cargo operations will be consolidated in Malpensa. Alitalia is also expected to drop its routes to Delhi, Mumbai and Shanghai Pu Dong as part of the plan. Several short haul routes are expected to be transferred from Malpensa to Linate airport. In addition, it is also considering selling its regional subsidiary Alitalia Express (XM/Rome Fiumicino) and retiring the ATR 72 fleet as well as several B767-300ERs, MD-82s and ERJ-145s. At least six A320-200s will be transferred to low-cost subsidiary Volareweb.com (VE/Milan Linate). Alitalia will give up its Milan Malpensa-Sarajevo route on October 27.
